Hi Gang-
The tragic events in the US and the inevitable that will follow, is still in our minds, as I’m sure it is in yours……
Well, this issue took a bit longer than anticipated
to finish for a variety of reasons, but it's finally done.
To make up for the delay, there are a few
more pages than usual.
I already have much done towards the next issue, so you should see it by the end of the year.
I'm looking to borrow the following publications
to scan for the VSRN CD:
Strombecker Table Top Topics Vol 1 No. 3
Spring 1963
Strombecker Inside Track No.3 (May/June 1965),
and any Inside Track magazines No.6 and up
If you are the first to help me out with either,

Hey Greg,
And they say Christmas only comes once a year!
I was surfing the web (er, I mean working) when I came across the VSRN logo at Old Weird Herald.
I can't tell you how much I've missed VSRN. I had a smile on my face the whole time I was downloading all five of the issues (this was the first time I ever smiled while downloading). Collecting these days is sort of like listening to CDs; it sounds great but it's kinda on the cold side. VSRN was interesting, informative, a great place to meet other collectors, but most of all it was FUN. You always made it fun............and slot cars are toys...............and toys are supposed to be fun. I think there are alot of people that have forgotton that. I really appreciate your years of dedication to the hobby, and I really enjoyed every issue of VSRN............and I'm really glad it's back!

Hi Greg,
Neat story on the Manta Ray on VSRN.
A few notes:
-The body was blow-molded, not vac-formed.
-The driver head in your car is a COX. The
MPC is different and has a chrome plated head of a different design.
-The fogging seems to come from the fellow
who glued the glass back on with a cyanoacrylate compound.
-The Manta Ray rear tires were white sponge
covered with white silicone. Sometimes they had a black wall painted over,
it is correct and original. The spare wheels/tires in the RTR box where
black molded sponge like on the SC100, Scarab or other MPC cars (as seen
on your car).
The hubcaps were generally the 5-scallop
"Halibrand" but most cars have had them replaced by the fan type which
is more available.
The body came in three different colors:
gold/silver
red/silver
cany-apple blue/silver (rare)
Please note that the manta Ray could probably
sell for more than $2M today, and would be the same value as the Maserati
4CM car. There were about 20 4CM made, not 2. Dean Jeffries dos not know
this...

Spent some time with
the MCS and MC&T gallery. To this day those covers
make me emotional. I addition to being such
magnificent signposts of my youth
they were flat-out brilliant photo images.
TIME, Sports Illustrated and LOOK
never had photos like these 'cept when they
resorted to sex but thats another
story.
At any rate I noticed
a few "holes" in the collection. Heck, even if I
have only one of the missing issues I can
loan them to you for the purposes
of completing the Gallery.
At the risk of going
too far ahead do you plan a Car Model Cover
Gallery? As a West Coast guy I'm a tad more
partial to MCS and MC&T yet CM
was just as good in most ways and had some
brilliant articles and covers all
their own.

Greg Holland wrote an excellent story about cleaning magnesium parts in the previous issue of VSRN's on-line magazine (see http://oldweirdherald.com/vsrn/Vsrn_104/CleaningMagParts.htm )
Since then, I took some pics of the Electric Dreams-recommended method as described in the story. When new, the COX parts were coated in a metallic pinkish solution by dipping, and this is exactly what we are going to do after cleaning the magnesium from the crud it accumulated over the years.

From greenish to gray with white powedery
deposits. Yuk!

First step is to glass bead the parts down
to the metal.

Next is to spray a mix of 95% urethane clear
with 5% candy apple red, in an uneven manner.

Next is to spray Pactra's "Dullcote" to get
a flat finish.

Net result: the finished product looks exactly
as it left the COX factory in 1966, AND, because of the fabulous properties
of modern coatings, it will take a lot longer to corrode again!

At the recent Chicago Hobby Show, there was a sign posted at the Revell / Monogram both that the Monogram brand would be returning to Slot Racing in 2002 ! This is excellent news!!!!! No additional information has been released, but we’ll try to find out more….

1969 Mustang, and Mark
Donahue's 1969 Penske Sunoko Camaro! They
feature full interior
trays, with roll cage, and mini-lite mag wheels.
These should be available sometime in 2002.
Famous from his many articles in the magazines
of the 60’s, Robert Schleicher has a new book called "Racing and Collecting
Slot Cars"
This book covers HO,1:32 and 1/24 scale slot
cars, tracks, and racing, with emphasis on the scale aspects of the hobby.
Try your favorite slot car dealer first. If they don’t have it, Classic
Motorbooks shows it in their latest catalog.
