In spite of the numbering sequence, CSX2286
was the last of the Daytona coupes to be completed. At one time, the chassis & body were stretched
3" for an experimental aluminum 390 cu. in. big block that Ford was developing. Then Ford switched
their support to the GT-40, and the big block coupe was abandoned.
Note that this was not the 427 "Super Coupe"
that was the subject of the Monogram slot car.
This was a totally different car that Pete
Brock designed for Shelby, but it too was abandoned when the GT-40 project
came along.
If you look closely at the photo of the engine
compartment, notice the wheel centers are painted black. This was the only one of the coupes that had
this done.
CSX2286 was converted back to the standard
wheelbase and 289 engine in time for LeMans in 1965, with Dan Gurney &
Jerry Grant as drivers. They set fast lap but DNF'ed with a clutch failure
after 15 hours. This was the only race for this car. In 2001,
the car was owned and campaigned on the Vintage Circuit by Rob Walton,
of the Wal-Mart Family!!!!!
