I think this is from a 1964
Sunday afternoon Supermodified show. I can't remember the driver's name,
but he was an awning maker, and used canvas for the body sides & roof.
It was quite a sight to see everything flapping as it went downt he track.
The are was black, with yellow numbers. This day, it ran with a single
4-barrel. The other thing I remember was that the back of his pickup truck
was filled with every other conceivable form of fuel manifold : 2-4's,
3-2's, 4-2's, 8-2's, injection, and who knows what else!
Anyone know who the driver was?

This picture was taken the same
day as the #3. I believe it was a class of car called a Bug, but they attempted
to run it with the Supers. Don't remember the driver's name - it didn't
run very much (or well), and maybe only practiced. It was metallic blue,
with white trim. If anyone has any info about this "Bug", I'd love to hear
it!
Mike Monnat: This was a local
car (Elmira,NY) built and driven by Norm Evendon. It first featured a six
cylinder Fuel Injected GMC poweplant. It seemed a tad underpowered, so
I think he updated it to a small block Chevy. It was later sold to Brian
Osgood, who won with it on the Central PA "Bug" circuit. |
| Billy Yuma came to the Binghamton
area during the summer months from Melbourne, Fla with both a super and
a URC sprint car. He was a regular at Shangri-La’s Friday night super events
that drew national stars during the early 60’s. Although this picture is
at Oswego this was the same car that he drove at Shangri-La to a feature
win in 1963. Billy had a successful career as a Florida sprint car
champion. He passed away of natural causes a few years ago.

Mike Monnat: When Billy Yuma
first came to Shangri-La back in 1963, he carried the letter X on the side
of the car, and it had a Chevy crossfire poweplant. The #79 was also on
the one & only modified he owned, which was destroyed in a fire on
the backstretch in 1965. He was the first driver to fill the seat of the
S/360 owned by Glen Scott, in it's turquoise & red incarnation. Whn
Yuma got fired later in the season, Diffendorf got the ride for the next
3 &1/2 years.
The above photo is of Billy in
his later days.
